Simmonds could pay big dividends for Flyers in Future

When the Flyers traded Mike Richards, they traded one of the most recognizable faces of their franchise. It was part of the big offseason overhaul, where GM Paul Holmgren essentially imploded a roster that finished 2nd in the East and made it to the second round of the playoffs.

While many people talk about the acquisition of Brayden Schenn, a top prospect in the Los Angeles Kings orginization, as the main benefit of the trade, Wayne Simmonds was an after thought, behind the acquistions of Schenn, Ily.a Bryzgalov, and Jaromir Jagr.

Simmonds, who signed today, should not be put aside. Simmonds scored 14 goals and 16 assists last year, but those stats alone should not judge him. He also had 75 PIM,  giving the Flyers a much needed physical boost, since the departure of Dan Carcillo to the Chicago Blackhawks.

At a press conference to announce the signing, Simmonds said "Broad Street Bullies like to play physical and hit everything that moves. That's the way I like to play. I feel if I'm not playing physical, then I'm not playing well. I think I can help in that aspect."

Simmonds realizes he could make a big impact. If he reaches his potential- remember, he is only 22- he could have a long lasting effect on Broad Street.
